Member-Led Run Safety Notice
The Run Requests feature helps SHIFT members connect and arrange informal runs together. It’s a great way to find some company for your activities, but these runs work differently from official SHIFT sessions.
Please read this notice before creating or joining a member-led run.
What is a member-led run?
Member-led runs are:
- informal meet-ups arranged directly between individual members;
- created by members, rather than SHIFT Run Club;
- not led, supervised, checked or risk-assessed by an official SHIFT run leader; and
- separate from our official club runs and events.
SHIFT provides the feature that allows members to connect, but we do not approve members, verify routes or supervise these meet-ups unless a run is clearly marked as an official SHIFT event.
Before joining a run
Please check the advertised distance, pace, route, terrain, start time and expected conditions before deciding whether the run is right for you.
You are responsible for assessing your own health, fitness and ability to take part safely. Don’t join a run if you are injured, unwell or feel that it is beyond your current ability.
Run details are provided by the member who created the request and may change. Ask the organiser if anything is unclear.
Meeting other members safely
When meeting someone for the first time:
- choose a busy, well-lit public meeting point;
- avoid sharing your home address or other unnecessary personal details;
- tell a friend or family member where you are going and when you expect to return;
- consider sharing your live location with someone you trust;
- keep your phone charged and bring any identification or emergency information you normally carry;
- arrange your own safe journey to and from the meeting point; and
- trust your instincts — there is never any pressure to attend or continue with a run.
Where possible, we recommend joining a group run rather than arranging to meet one other member alone, particularly when you have not met before.
While running
Take reasonable care of yourself, the other runners and members of the public.
Follow the Highway Code and any local rules, use safe crossing points and wear suitable clothing, footwear and visibility equipment for the route and conditions.
Member-led runs do not have a designated SHIFT run leader. Everyone taking part should agree the planned pace and route and make sure nobody is knowingly placed in an unsafe situation.
You may slow down, change your plans or leave the run at any time. Tell the other runners before separating from the group wherever it is safe and practical to do so.
Concerns and emergencies
Report inappropriate, misleading or concerning behaviour by emailing shiftrunclub@hotmail.com or contacting Taylor Seagrave (founder of SHIFT) directly.
We may review reports, remove run requests or restrict accounts where reasonably necessary to protect the community.
In an emergency, or where someone is in immediate danger, call 999. Do not rely on contacting SHIFT for urgent assistance.
Your confirmation
By creating or joining a member-led run, you confirm that you:
- understand that it is an informal arrangement between members and not an official SHIFT run;
- have considered whether the run is appropriate for you;
- accept responsibility for making sensible decisions about your own participation and personal safety; and
- agree to follow the SHIFT Terms of Use and Community Guidelines.
Nothing in this notice excludes or limits any responsibility that cannot legally be excluded.
